Researcher & educator
Science grounded in curiosity, service, and access.
I am Dr. Whika Febria Dewatisari, S.Si., M.Si., an Associate Professor (Lektor Kepala) in Biology at Universitas Terbuka. My work connects plant science, phytochemistry, microbiology, and open distance education.
In the laboratory, I investigate bioactive compounds and the antibacterial and antibiofilm potential of medicinal plants. In the classroom, I design approachable learning experiences that help distance learners ask better questions, test ideas, and build confidence in science.
Research focus
- Plant Phytochemistry & Secondary Metabolites: Extraction and TLC/GC-MS screening of flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and alkaloids from medicinal flora.
- Antibacterial & Antibiofilm Assays: Investigating cellular mechanisms of natural extracts (e.g. Sansevieria trifasciata) against pathogenic bacterial strains.
- Ethnopharmacology: Scientific evaluation of Indonesian herbal remedies like Wedang Uwuh and Mitragyna speciosa.
- Open & Distance Learning Pedagogy: Innovating virtual and distance practical modules for biology students across Indonesia.
